Spermine – a natural antioxidant

Spermine has been known for over 300 years, and was the first biomolecule to have been discovered in a microscope. This was done in 1678, by Leeuvenhoek, the inventor of the microscope. The anti-oxidative effect of Spermine was first established in 1983-84 by Norwegian scientists at the University of Tromsø (Norway).

Spermine is a natural antioxidant, which is found in all living organisms. Research shows that Spermine has an important function in those areas of the body that are exposed to a high level of oxygen usage. This pertains for example to the skin, the brain, sperm cells and the lungs in particular. Spermine’s role is that of protecting cells against free radicals and their destructive effects.

Following several years of extensive research on Spermine, it became evident that it is beneficial to use this antioxidant in skin care products. The research was able to prove that Spermine is the only know antioxidant for which the skin cells have an active absorption mechanism. Thus Spermine protects such elastic components in the skin as collagen and elastin against oxidative decomposition. Additionally, Spermine reduces the decomposition of the skin’s own moisturizer, hyaluronic acid. If collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are not protected, the skin loses its elasticity and moisture. The skin is thus damaged more than is necessary.

We have pointed out that traditional antioxidants, such as various vitamins, are not capable of penetrating the stratum corneum and are therefore not able to reach the deeper areas of the skin where aging occurs. Spermine is an antioxidant, which is soluble in both water and fat phases and is therefore capable of penetrating deep within the skin’s innermost layers. In this manner, Spermine can combat the aging process where it is actually occurring – in the stratum basale.

A series of scientific research findings can serve to document that aging of the skin is delayed considerably if Spermine is added to skin care preparations. This research also identifies how skin cells react to some of the most common active ingredients currently used in anti-aging products. Spermine’s effects are indisputably far superior.

We have therefore chosen to introduce a new series of skin care products with Spermine as the main active ingredient, and based on a new philosophy, innovative scientific methods and a whole new standard for results – Skinscience!

Key Elements Concerning the Use of Spermine in skin care

» The skin’s natural antioxidant
» Delays aging of cells
» Protects the skin against UV-induced damage
» Capable of penetrating the epidermis, unlike other antioxidants
» Cells are equipped with a natural absorption of Spermine
» Stimulates the repair of damaged DNA in skin cells
» Protects the skin’s own moisturizer (hyaluronic acid) against oxidative decomposition
» Works preventatively against aging pigments in the skin
» Renders free radicals harmless
» Activated by UV radiation
» Repairs and soothes sun burnt skin
» Stimulates the production of collagen in dermis
» Protects the skin’s other antioxidants against oxidative decomposition
» One of the most stabile antioxidants
